In Case You Missed It #5: Django Unchained Review

This is the segment where I talk about movies pre-2015 that may have escaped the public consciousness in recent years. I'm Logan Tyler Smith, and this is In Case You Missed It.

In “Django Unchained”, a slave in the Antebellum South named Django is freed by a german bounty hunter in order to find a bounty. Once the bounty is found, Django and the bounty hunter team up to free Django’s wife from a sadistic plantation owner. This, however, will prove a more difficult task than initially expected.

Django is one of those rare director-driven films that makes it to the mainstream. Written and directed by fan-favorite director Quentin Tarantino, this movie works on many levels. Some of the ways the film works include having witty dialogue, powerful performances, and a solid cast. Despite the film’s rocky subject matter and place in history, the film also makes you think in a matter-of-fact way about slavery’s role in America’s past. Some of the ways the slaves are treated throughout the movie make you realize how common this was in the South at the time.

If you’re a fan of director Quentin Tarantino’s works already, you’ll know that the film, like his others, has the perfect combination of dialogue and acting choices. Jaime Foxx wins as the titular Django, and german polylingual actor Christoph Waltz shines in his part as an eloquent bounty hunter. You also can’t deny Leonardo DiCaprio’s villainous role as a plantation owner

Despite the movie’s more awesome qualities, the film is very explicit; almost uncomfortably so. I personally found the bloody violence and racist language to be very disturbing.

In conclusion, if you’re already a fan of the acclaimed director’s use of violence, dialogue, and art/mainstream fusion, then you should by all means see it. However, if you are normally squeamish and/or coming into this film without knowledge of his others, then you should probably stay at home. Lightning did strike, which basically means it can inspire awe or horror.

That's my take. I'm Logan Tyler Smith and this has been In Case You Missed It.
